Things to know and do in your mid-20s

So you are already in your mid 20s. In the morning you’ll go to work and when you got home, you cuddle with your pillows after a tiring day. Gone are your experimentation and happy-go-lucky days. As they say, mid-20s as part of the quarter life crisis is more of the time when people get insecure and depressed. It is the time when a part of you is still a kid and another tells you that you are already in your adulthood.

As you reached this stage when reality strikes as if everywhere, what do you do to cope up? How do you deal with the quarter life crisis?

1. Discover your hidden or forgotten passion.

You have that job you always wanted, you are excelling yet you feel there is something missing. Have you ever thought that maybe it is your hidden or forgotten passion that’s causing this? Maybe it’s still waiting for you for it to be discovered?

When I was working as an Information Systems Specialist, I felt like there is something I still want to do. Until one day, I started blogging again. After a tiring day at work, I write my experiences, and, because my WordPress is still a “published” blog, I post my works there. Whether it’s a food review, a recent travel experience -when I know people read it, there is a feeling of satisfaction and contentment which I don’t feel before.

2. Understand that as you grow old, your circle of friends get smaller

As you grow old, you meet a lot of people. You have a lot of friends when you are in college. You have hundreds of “friends” at Facebook. But how many of those are real? How many of those actually stayed connected with you? You have to be aware that as people grow old, they choose their own paths and how they would live. I guess that’s what you also do. Growing old means quality over quantity. Those who stayed are those who matter. 🙂

3. Have financial freedom

Money is supposed to be used, but when you say financial freedom, it is not synonymous to wastingLazada Philippines money. While rewarding yourself once in a while is important, one thing you need to have in your mid-20s is to save. Track your spending, write it down. Set your budget. Start from your monthly salary then deduct your spending for your needs. If you have debts, pay those first and avoid using your credit card for the mean time. It is important to track your spending so you would know if you are exhausting over on the money you have. Saving means preparing, you will also need those when you have decided to settle down already.

4. Learn a new hobby

Switch your phone and tablet off and learn a new hobby. Leisure activities usually reduce anxiety and depression which people in mid 20s usually encounter. Think of things that you wanted to do when you are a kid that you might still enjoy now. There are also schools that provide lessons if you want to know how to play a certain musical instrument or if you want to know how to cook or bake.

5. Start reading books

Do you still remember the last time you read a book? A good book?

Again, switch off your mobile phones and stop browsing on your Facebook news feeds, try reading a book now. There are a lot of books available at book sales or even eBooks available for download on the web. If you don’t know where to start or what to read, check my list on my Goodreads.

6. Travel

They say when you reach your mid-20s, you’ll start to think of a lot of things. Some deal with debts they had during their early 20s, some deal with insecurities over other people’s success. This is actually the right time to do soul searching. Best way? By traveling. Whether alone of with friends, enjoy a day or two for a vacation. Go on the beach and release all the stress. Travel to another country or province, there, you’ll meet diverse people and eventually, it’ll make a better you.

8. Get it serious

Work isn’t what your whole being means. Do not stop there. Yes, what  I am saying is get a serious relationship. You should be thinking of your future now and I believe, having your own  family is one of your dream. Being in a serious relationship does not mean you let go of fun. What more fun can you get when there is someone who constantly reminds you how good you are with what you are doing?

9. Catch up

Yes, you may have a smaller circle but that made it easier for your to have time with them. Go out and have some coffee once in a while. Talk about experiences and dreams. Laugh a little harder! You need that. 🙂

Congratulations on hitting this stage of your life. There may be ups and downs but always keep in mind that what’s important is dealing with it. In life, what matters is we enjoy it. They say mid-20s is hard to deal with. Just relax… And all the things will fall into its right places.

Hi! I love this blog post. Dealing with quarter life crisis. Every 20-something deals with this, we may be aware or unaware of it. Like the majority of what you included in the list, I’ve done them, but for me, what really helped me get over that stage is through traveling and reading “The Alchemist”. Being in a new place gives us a new and different perspective in life. I was able to reflect when I traveled last year and during that time, I had envisioned what or where I wanna end up or what I want to do in the future. The process to get over this stage is different from one person to another, but surely, you will get there. You may want to visit my blog too. bernasolis.wordpress.com Thanks! 🙂

    Hi Aika 🙂

You have a pretty neat list here, and out of all the items, the best thing for me is traveling. I can never emphasize enough the fulfillment a person can get from traveling. I really wish I started on it early in my 20s, but oh wells, better late than never.

I’m a 23 year old mom and I am feeling the quarter life crisis already, hence why I blog. My husband also recommended that I do your step 1 and he even paid fr my make up classes cause of that. I am hoping that soon I will be able to combat this quarter life crisis and learn a bit more about myself later on. Inspiring post! 🙂

Thank you nicole! Some people think it is not hard to reach this time of ourlives but no. It is quite hard. You need to deal with a lot of things and we are torn. Continue that. Do things 1 step at a time. 🙂

I wish I have seen your list earlier so I can realize the things I’m realizing now. I’m in my late 20s already and looking back, how I wished I made the most of my early 20s. At least the learning a new hobby and travelling part. 🙂

Great post to reflect on! 🙂

I got married at the age of 23 to my first and girlfriend of 5 years. So I guess I missed the quarter life crisis because we (wifey and I) are happy growing up, haha!

Kidding aside, you hit the nail with (1) saving (2) finding your purpose (3) developing a hobby and (4) reading books. This will give you the leg room for the future.
